Kodagu Tourism
Often hailed as the ‘Scotland of India’, Kodagu is one of the most premier and lucrative hill destinations in South India. Located at an altitude of 1100 meters above the sea level, Kodagu is an administrative district of the state of Karnataka. In the north western part of the border lies Dakshina Kannada, in the northern part is Hassan district, in the eastern part is Mysore and the Kannur district of Kerala is located on the south western border.
Kodagu was the home of the Kodavas, who were believed to be the descendents of the valiant Greeks. Though proposed as an independent state in 1950, the Indian Government has declared it to be a district of Karnataka in 1956. It boasts of three big talukas, namely, Veerajapete and Somvarapete and Madikeri, which is the district headquarter.
What makes Kodagu outstanding among all the other hill stations is its mixed platter of pristine scenic beauty, verdant teakwood forests, staggering mountain ranges, lovely undulating valleys and endless expanses of coffee plantations. Kodagu has something for everyone in her kitty. The breathtaking heights of Tadiandamol, Brahmagiri and Pushpagiri throw their arms open for the lovers of adventure sports. The Nagarhole National Park offers a perfect haven for the Bird watchers and Nature lovers and the Omkareswara temple provide a sublime and enriched spiritual experience to the religious minded.
Kodagu therefore is a perfect retreat to let your hair down and brush your shoulders with nature, at its wildest best. Though the winter months are considered to be the best season to pay the site a visit, the monsoon also offers unparallel and scintillating sights to behold. So if you want to destress yourself and enjoy a balmy repository in the warm lap of mother nature, pack your bags and come to Kodagu, also called the ‘Kashmir of South India’. It is also popularly called by its anglicized name, Coorg.
